Commonly misidentified as Little Bluestem, Broomsedge is a native plant that is a dominant species in the savannah prairies of the eastern United States. Like other bluestems, it is visually appealing, especially when sunlight shines on its fluffy seedheads. Unfortunately, Broomsedge has earned a bad reputation as an invader due to the mismanagement of overgrazed lands. However, this characteristic is actually beneficial for erosion control. Additionally, Broomsedge provides cover and nesting material for quail and serves as a good food source in winter. It is also a larval host plant for butterflies, such as the Zabulon.
