Giant ragweed is one of the earliest summer annuals to emerge, allowing it to dominate plant communities in disturbed habitats. It is often referred to as "horseweed" because horses enjoy eating its foliage. Various biotypes of giant ragweed have developed extended emergence periods, which enhances their survival in crop fields. This plant is commonly found along the fence rows of agronomic crop fields and pastures in Tennessee, and it is increasingly becoming established in these crop areas.
