River Oats is a native, clump-forming ornamental grass belonging to the Poaceae family. This easy-to-grow grass typically reaches heights of 2 to 5 feet and widths of 1 to 2 feet. Its distinctive, flat nodding seed heads, which resemble oats, emerge green in the spring, turn tan in the summer, and develop a purplish hue in the fall. These seed heads sway gracefully in the slightest breeze. The bamboo-like leaves can turn yellow-gold in the fall if they receive enough sunlight. River Oats serves as a larval host plant for butterflies and provides a food source for small mammals and birds. It is well-suited for naturalized areas, along streams, or at the edges of water gardens. However, be mindful of its placement, especially in smaller gardens, as it can spread aggressively through rhizomes and seeds.
