Perkins' Mammoth Long Pod okra is characterized by its bright green pods that measure four to six inches in length. The plants can grow quite tall, reaching heights of five to six feet. This variety is excellent for pickling, canning, and adding to soups and gumbo. To sow the seeds, either plant them ¾ inches deep directly in the garden after the soil has warmed or start them in pots and transplant them once the risk of frost has passed. Since okra seeds have tough seed coats, scarifying or soaking the seeds before planting can improve germination rates.
