The White Acre Pea is an heirloom, open-pollinated variety of cowpea. It is smaller than a Blackeye Pea but slightly larger than a Sa Dandy Pea. This southern pea variety features compact, bushy plants that produce dense foliage, which helps to shade and suppress new weed growth. The pods measure 7-9 inches in length and typically contain 18-25 peas each. These pods grow on the top of the plant, making harvesting easy and clean. The pods are easy to shell, and the peas have a slightly kidney-like shape due to the semi-crowded nature inside the pod. When harvested fresh, the peas are pale green. Known for its mild, nutty flavor and creamy texture, the White Acre Pea is considered a southern delicacy. While it is relatively drought-tolerant, the peas thrive best when grown with drip irrigation to ensure adequate water throughout their growing season.
