Dent corn features hard, "flinty" sides with soft, starchy tops and cores. This structure allows the ends of the kernels to collapse or "dent" as the corn dries. The yellow dented kernels are tightly packed on large ears, which can measure up to three inches in diameter and seven inches in length. Varieties of dent corn are the most commonly grown types in the United States, and they are used to produce oils, syrups, grits, meals, flours, biofuel, silage, and livestock feed.
