Daikon radish is cultivated primarily for its large, conical white root, which is used for human consumption in gardens, food plots, and as winter forage for livestock. It is often referred to as a “tillage radish” in cover crop blends because its root is effective at breaking through soil hardpan. Daikon radish is exceptionally hardy, thriving in nearly all climates and continuing to grow well even as winter temperatures set in. This resilience makes it a popular choice for cattle forage during the winter months. The dense canopy formed by Daikon radish foliage can reduce the need for herbicides by shading the soil and suppressing weed growth and competition.
